Author(s): Elin Andersson, Jonas Lindström, and Sofia Karlsson
Abstract: The rapid expansion of data-intensive applications such as 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things has placed immense pressure on high-speed electrical communication networks. Traditional compression methods like Huffman coding and Lempel-Ziv, though effective for storage and offline use, are unable to meet the stringent latency and efficiency requirements of real-time transmission. This study investigates the performance of lightweight adaptive entropy-based models, predictive coding techniques, and their hybrid integration (AE+PC) to determine their suitability for high-speed environments. Experimental evaluations were conducted across multimedia, IoT sensor, and packet trace datasets, measuring compression ratio, end-to-end latency, goodput, and energy consumption. Results revealed that the Hybrid (AE+PC) algorithm consistently outperformed conventional methods, achieving higher compression ratios, significant latency reductions, improved goodput, and superior energy efficiency. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA and Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons, confirmed the significance of these improvements. The findings validate the hypothesis that adaptive and predictive compression strategies, when combined and optimized for hardware parallelization, can deliver real-time performance gains without sacrificing error resilience. This research contributes to bridging the gap between theoretical compression efficiency and practical deployment, offering evidence that Hybrid (AE+PC) schemes can be a cornerstone of next-generation communication infrastructures. The outcomes hold direct implications for data centers, edge computing systems, and telecommunication providers seeking to enhance scalability, reliability, and sustainability of their networks.
